The legendary forest of Brocéliande lies in the Brittany region of Paimpont (south West of Rennes) and covers an area of 18,000 acres, the remnants of a vast primeval forest which in the first centuries A.D. covered the interior of Brittany.
This mysterious shadowy forest has spawned numerous legends including many of King Arthur and the Knights of Camelot and the Wizard Merlin.
The spring at Barenton to the north of Beauvais is where Merlin first encountered the enchantress Vivien who enchanted and then imprisioned him in 9 magical circles "as intangible as air but as hard as rock" in order to be with the magician for ever. His tomb can still be visited...

The forest is still an important site for numerous groups of witches, both black & white, & druid cult followers all of whom perform rituals in the forest at appropriate times of the year.

This magical forest and its legends prompted the Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson to compose his epic work "Merlin & Vivien" which in turn inspired the writing of the screenplay "Do Elephants Pray?"
